EX SOUTHERN RAILWAY RESTRICTION ‘O’ COACH BUILT TO DIAGRAM 2105 AT EASTLEIGH IN 1931.
LOT NUMBER 498. SEATING CAPACITY WHEN BUILT 36.

NUMBERED 3690, THE COACH FORMED PART OF SOUTHERN RAILWAY SET NO 216 AND WAS USED ON THE LONDON, TONBRIDGE AND HASTINGS LINE. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A REGULAR VISITOR TO ROBERTSBRIDGE. FROM 1960 IT WAS USED AS A LOOSE COACH UNTIL WITHDRAWAL IN OCTOBER 1961.

IT WAS TRANSFERRED TO DEPARTMENTAL SERVICE IN DECEMBER 1962, AND RE-NUMBERED DS (LATER ADS) 70163. IN USE AS A MOBILE OFFICE AT WIMBLEDON FROM AUGUST 1969 AND THEN FORMED PART OF THE SOUTHERN REGION CONTROL TRAIN UNTIL 1980.

SINCE PRESERVATION IT HAS RESIDED ON THE GREAT CENTRAL RAILWAY AND THE SPA VALLEY RAILWAY UNTIL TRANSFER TO THE ROTHER VALLEY RAILWAY IN MARCH 2003.

EX-SOUTHERN RAILWAY  GUARDS BRAKE VAN
NO. 440

RESTRICTION ‘O’ 4 WHEELED BRAKE BUILT TO DIAGRAM 3092 IN 1937. LOT NUMBER 928. LENGTH  36’. WHEELBASE 23’. WEIGHT 16 TONS. THE UNDERFRAME WAS MADE AT THE SOUTHERN RAILWAY WORKS AT ASHFORD, KENT AND THE BODY FITTED AT EASTLEIGH.

BUILT FOR AVAILABILITY ON PASSENGER OR PARCEL TRAINS. IT HAS TWO LUGGAGE SECTIONS WITH A PARTITIONED OFF CENTRAL GUARD’S COMPARTMENT IN BETWEEN. A CURIOUS FEATURE IS THE BODY PLANKING ARRANGED IN PAIRS OF WIDE AND NARROW (3 ½” AND 6 ½” PLANKS RESPECTIVELY).  

DESIGNATED “VAN C” BY THE SOUTHERN RAILWAY AND “BY” BY BRITISH RAILWAYS.

PURCHASED FROM BR IN JUNE 1977, IT WAS LOCATED ON THE KENT & EAST SUSSEX RAILWAY (KESR NO 66) UNTIL TRANSFER TO THE ROTHER VALLEY RAILWAY IN 1997.

EX-SOUTHERN RAILWAY  GANGWAYED BOGIE LUGGAGE VAN

NO. 2339

BUILT IN DECEMBER 1930 BY THE SOUTHERN RAILWAY AT ASHFORD TO DIAGRAM 3098, USING THE UNDERFRAME OF AN EX-LONDON AND SOUTH WESTERN RAILWAY 49’ COMPOSITE COACH NO. 3001 BUILT IN 1905. DESIGNATED “GBL” BY THE SOUTHERN RAILWAY AND “CORR PMV” BY BRITISH RAILWAYS.

LENGTH  51’ 3”. BOGIE CENTRES 34’ 3”. WEIGHT 26 TONS.

IT WAS CONVERTED TO AND USED AS AN AMBULANCE COACH IN FEBRUARY 1944 (NO.3609) BEING CONVERTED BACK IN JANUARY 1947. IT WAS AGAIN CONVERTED IN 1960 AND TRANSFERRED INTO BR DEPARTMENTAL SERVICE AS A MESS AND TOOL VAN (NO. DS70076).

WITHDRAWN BY BR IN 1981, IT WAS PURCHASED IN MAY 1982 FROM BASINGSTOKE AND WAS LOCATED ON THE KENT & EAST SUSSEX RAILWAY (KESR NO 77) UNTIL TRANSFER TO THE ROTHER VALLEY RAILWAY IN 1997.

PRESENTLY IN USE AS OUR STAFF MESS VAN.
